Dr. Chris Pederson graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Zoology from U.T. in 1974. He attended medical school at Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, and completed training in surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio in 1983. After this he travelled to Duke University Medical Center and completed a residency in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He had further training as a Christine Kleinert Fellow in Hand Surgery at the University of Louisville and completed his final year of training as a Fellow in Reconstructive Microsurgery at St. Vincent’s Hospital Microsurgery Unit in Melbourne, Australia. After all of this in 1987, he returned to Duke University to join the faculty of Plastic Surgery and the Orthopaedic Hand Surgery team. In 1989 he returned to San Antonio as the Chief of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the U.T. Health Science Center. While remaining the Chief of Plastic Surgery for the next four years, he joined Dr. David Green at the Hand Center of San Antonio in 1989.

Dr. Pederson was the President and Fellowship Director for the Hand Center for 10 years. He was also Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery and Orthopaedic Surgery at the medical school in San Antonio. The fellowship training program in Hand Surgery at the Hand Center trained over 80 hand surgeons during his time there who are now practicing all over the country. In January 2016 he returned to full-time teaching as a Professor of Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, and Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He is also the Head of Hand Surgery and Microsurgery at Texas Children’s Hospital. He is an author and one of the editors of Green’s Operative Hand Surgery. He is a long-time member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Hand Surgery and the Journal of Reconstructive Microsurgery. He also serves as a guest editor for the Journal of Trauma and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He has authored over 60 papers in peer-reviewed journals and 34 textbook chapters on hand surgery and microsurgery. He is a member of numerous national and international societies, and has served on the Executive Council of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and is a past president of the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery.  He is the president of the American Association for Hand Surgery for 2017.

He is married to Cynthia (B.S., U.T., 1977) and they have three great kids Liv (B.F.A., U.T., 2004), Anton (B.A. CNS, U.T., 2008), and Candice (B.A., U.T., 2010.).
