International Travel to Austin, TX

Flights to Austin, TX will arrive at the Austin Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA).  Austin is a relatively small city, but there are two trans-Atlantic airports with direct connections to ABIA: London-Heathrow (British Airways) and Frankfurt (Condor Airlines).  If traveling from other international locations, however, one or more connections will likely be required to reach Austin.

Some international visitors may require a Visa to come to the US.  Please look at the US Travel Website to determine whether you need a visa and email us (eurowd21@gmail.com) if there's anything you need.

Getting to Downtown Austin/UT Campus from the Airport

The Austin airport is located about 10 miles from downtown and 12 miles from the UT campus.  Several ground transportation options are available (buses, cabs, ride sharing apps like Uber and Lyft, shuttles, rental cars) which can be found listed here on the ABIA website.  Here is some helpful info for some of these options:

  • Bus #20 provides the most direct route from the ABIA terminal to downtown Austin and the UT campus.  The ride costs $1.25, and takes 40-50 minutes depending on where you intend to get off.  The best campus stop is 2231 Guadalupe & West Mall UT.
  • Cabs and ride sharing companies like Lyft and Uber typically cost about $20-25 for a ride and will take about 20-25 minutes.
  • Rental cars are available at ABIA but are much more expensive to rent from the airport than in non-airport locations due to additional taxes.  A week-long economy rental will cost around $370 from the airport, and $240 from a non-airport location.

Traffic along major highways in Austin, especially I-35, can be very bad at times and may increase commuting times to/from the airport by 5-20 minutes depending on the time of day.

Traveling within Austin

All conference events, besides the Wednesday afternoon social event, will be within walking distance of accommodations unless you opt for more distant off-campus accommodations.  For those who wish to explore more of Austin and don't have rental cars, the CapMetro city bus system or a ride share app like Uber or Lyft are the most convenient forms of transportation.

If using the city bus system, it's highly recommended that you download and use the CapMetro smartphone app to look up bus routes, plan trips, and pay for tickets.  You can also pay for bus tickets when you enter the bus, but they only accept cash and will not have change available for large bills.  Single use bus tickets typically cost $1.25.  Multi-use passes can also be bought.

Depending on your choice of accommodation for the workshop, use of transportation services may or may not be required to reach the workshop venue each day.  The workshop will be held on UT's campus.  For those choosing on-campus accommodations, UT is a very pedestrian friendly area.  For those staying off campus, arrival to UT by bus, cab, or car is recommended.  UT is approximately 2 miles from central downtown.

Parking On Campus

For those using rental cars, there are several parking garages located around UT's campus.  The closest parking to the workshop venue will be the San Atonio Garage.  See the Austin Info tab for maps and locations of the various parking garages.  Depending on whether you're trying to get to the conference venue, the on-campus residence halls, or the banquet dinner, certain garages will get you within closer walking distance.

Parking fees are the same for all garages and are calculated based on time.  When you enter a garage, you will get a ticket which you must return later to determine your time.  Lost tickets will cost you $27.
