In the era of large-scale earth systems modeling, we need better feedback on whether these models adequately capture biophysical dynamics. We argue that attempting to forecast in the near-term, meaning months to years rather than decades to centuries, will rapidly advance our prediction skill, just as it has for weather forecasters.
