Opportunities for UT/Mexico collaboration

An Initiative of The University of Texas System

From: René Zenteno, Executive Director of ConTex To: UT System Institutions
Subject: ConTex Office and Support for Ph.D. students

September marked the official launch of the ConTex office, established to oversee the partnership between UT System and Mexico’s National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT). The ConTex office will help support new programs, including Mexican Ph.D. student educational opportunities at UT institutions, exchange of postdoctoral and faculty fellows, mobility of non- degree seeking graduate students (short-term visits), and collaborative research projects. The programs are open to faculty, staff, students and postdoctoral researchers from all 14 UT System institutions.

This partnership is the first of its kind in Texas and represents an unprecedented level of support for Mexico’s best and brightest students to pursue a Ph.D. at a UT System institution. With the support of ConTex, Mexican students admitted to our Ph.D. programs will be eligible for funding that will cover up to five years of tuition, fees, and health insurance costs, in addition to a monthly stipend. For the upcoming 2017 – 2018 academic year, we are expecting to support at least 30 Mexican doctoral students.

It is important to note that admissions decisions will be the sole responsibility of academic departments. Neither the ConTex office nor CONACYT will be involved in admissions decisions. Students from Mexico that are successfully admitted to the program of their interest will automatically qualify for CONACYT funding through the ConTex office. Students must submit their admissions letter as part of the request for funding. The CONACYT – UT System agreement is designed such that Mexican students who successfully gain admittance to our PhD programs will have a high likelihood of receiving funding.

The ConTex office is here to serve and facilitate the success of this international partnership. In the coming months we will coordinate and visit with each UT System institution for insight as we solidify the processes for each program component.
