Letters of Recommendation

I am happy to write letters of recommendation for students who have taken my courses. However, please recognize that if you have only taken one class with me (particularly if it was a large class and I never interacted with you outside of class, such as in office hours) then I will not be able to write a very strong or specific letter for you. If you have other professors who know you better it is probably best to ask them instead. Nevertheless, students sometimes would still like to have me write a letter. If this is the case please know that I will only be able to comment on things like your participation in class, your writing skills (if you took a writing class with me), your performance in the class, and the content of the course you took and how it relates to the program you are applying to.

If you are (or were) a Research Assistant in my lab, I consider it part of my mentorship role to write a letter for you. All you need to do is follow the instructions below.

If you would like to request a letter from me there are a number of pieces of information I will need in order to ensure that I can write you the best letter possible. First, I must receive requests for letters at least 4 weeks before your first deadline to ensure that I have enough time to complete a strong letter for you. Please complete this form with information about the schools you are applying to. Email it to Dr. Williamson along with any forms that need to be submitted and a copy (draft is ok) of your personal statement that you will submit with your applications. After I receive all of this information I will email you back to let you know whether I will be able to write a letter for you.

For my part, I will ensure that I write a letter that conveys your strengths and is free of gender and racial bias.
