TRIUMPF

The Texas Petawatt Laser (TPW) Facility is an internationally unique plasma physics facility: it delivers high energy laser pulses for users in a unique parameter range, pulse energy of up to 130 J with pulse duration under 130 fs.  There is no laser in the US with this specific set of capabilities.  There are a number of scientific opportunities that would benefit from the availability of multiple, simultaneous laser beams in the same chamber, including multiple high energy ultrashort pulse beams with at least one of multiple petawatts of power, one with kJ nanosecond pulses for compression and a co-located MA pulsed power driver.  The new facility is the Texas Relativistic Intensity Ultrafast Multi-beam Plasma science Facility – TRIUMPF.  This facility will be internationally unique in the combination of multiple synchronized laser pulses that will be designed to allow a range of plasma, atomic, and optical physics experiments previously inaccessible.

TRIUMPF in its final, complete configuration will be composed of three complimentary and temporally synchronized high energy lasers: the existing Texas Petawatt Laser; a 500-J, 527 nm, nanosecond, pulse-shapeable beam; and a 5 PW OPCPA/Ti:sapphire laser which will deliver 150 J in 30 fs.  All three beams will be synchronized to within roughly 1 ps.  Various combinations of the three lasers will shoot into four different target chambers with varying capabilities.  This suite of beams will be complimented by a multi-Joule interaction beam for specialized laser-plasma interaction studies and a 400 kA µs pulse scale pulsed power device for pre-magnetized HED plasma experiments. This facility will provide a singularly unique capability; it would allow experiments which combine two or three of these laser pulses to create or probe states of dense plasma or materials, accelerate particles to high energy, or probe dense plasmas in strong external magnetic fields, experiments which could not be conducted at any of the nations’ existing small or mid-scale single beam laser facilities.  It also will include a multi-PW laser pulse for ultra-intense strong field experiments.
